Payday Loans in Canada: How They Work and What They Cost
How a single-payment advance works, why the price changes at the provincial border, and what happens between request and deposit.
The shape of a payday loan
A payday loan is one of the simplest credit products sold in Canada. You receive a set amount — usually somewhere between $100 and $1,500 — and you repay it in full on a single date, normally the day your next paycheque lands. There is no monthly schedule and no revolving balance.
That single-payment structure is the whole point. It suits a shortfall you already know how to close: the money is coming, it just is not here yet.
Why the price changes at the provincial border
Canada has no single national payday lending rule. Each province and territory licenses its own lenders and sets its own ceiling on what they may charge, which is why the same $500 advance can cost different amounts in different parts of the country.
Ontario and British Columbia both cap the fee at $15 for every $100 advanced. Manitoba and Saskatchewan allow up to $17 per $100, while Newfoundland and Labrador sets its ceiling at $14. Quebec takes a different route entirely: traditional payday lending is not permitted there, and credit is instead limited to a 35% annual rate.
Reading the cost before you sign
Whatever the cap in your province, the lender has to state the total cost in plain dollars before you commit. What you repay is the amount advanced plus that capped fee — nothing else should appear on the agreement.
If a number on the contract does not match what you were told, stop. A licensed lender will not object to you taking the paperwork away to read it.

Most of the process happens on your phone. You provide basic identity details, proof of income, and your bank account information. The lender reviews the file — frequently within minutes — and once you have signed the agreement, the funds are sent by Interac e-Transfer.
Approval leans on your income and how your bank account behaves rather than on your credit score, so a past credit problem is not automatically disqualifying. Stars For Youth is a referral service rather than a lender: we introduce you to licensed lenders, and the lender makes the final call.
